5:00 PM - 5:30 PM Est Colleen Cooley Presents “Beyond the pandemic” | Zoom invitation
We are thrilled to kick off No Man’s Land Flagship Festival with guest speaker Colleen Cooley! Colleen grew up wandering the sandstones, mesas, and washes in Shonto, Arizona located on the Navajo Nation. Her curious mind and innate connection to the lands and waters led her to earn an M.S. in Climate Science + Solutions from Northern Arizona University in 2012. Colleen is an advocate and river guide on the San Juan River, community organizer, facilitator, researcher, amateur photographer, and a volunteer and recent board member with the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival.
In 2020, Colleen began a panel discussion series to bring more awareness to Indigenous sovereignty and diversity, equity and inclusion in the outdoors. This presentation will highlight the outcomes from these panel discussions and ways to move beyond land acknowledgment and DEI statements.
This presentation by colleen cooley is brought to you by native women’s wilderness.
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST WOmen in film + Photo panel discussion | zoom invitation
Join us for our Women in Film and Photography Panel Discussion: there are so many subtopics within the subject of women in photography and film and we’d like to take this opportunity to address some of them. The general advancement of these professions can only benefit from having more voices heard in an increasingly competitive environment, one that was historically dominated by a male narrative for so long. On Thursday, we will hear from some of the leading women in this field, including all-star filmmakers and photographers: Tara Kerzhner, Janelle Paciencia, Marie-Louise Nkashama, Nathalie DuPré, and Biz Young. NMLFF Program Director Liz Esche will be spearheading this conversation.

Women have historically been excluded from the “Outdoors” narrative, as the narrative was traditionally one of male dominance and assertion of masculinity. Our rock-star Athlete Panel this year will include athletes Angela Lee, Maiza Lima, Erin Parisi, Maura Kistler, and Caroline Gleich. Amelia Howe of the American Alpine Club and Outdoor Advocacy will be moderating this panel discussion.

We are proud to bring back our Allies in Gender Equity Panel Discussion for its third Flagship Festival because we want to acknowledge that men and boys also benefit from this work that tears down constrictive gender roles and stereotypes that negatively impact them, too. We proudly invite Kai Lightner, Lex Rodgers, Forrest Ubuntu Zola Mbali, and Eli Kerr to our Saturday Allies in Gender Equality Panel Discussion. This conversation will be facilitated by Amelia Howe of the American Alpine Club and Outdoor Advocacy.

Flagship wouldn’t be the same without our annual live podcast. Sarah Shimazaki from Outside Voices Podcast joins us as our special guest podcast host! Outside Voices Podcast shares personal stories about our relationships with nature and the outdoors. We all have a connection to the earth, perhaps severed by colonization, enslavement, assimilation, and racism. Outside Voices is about unlearning everything we are told about “the Great Outdoors” and instead, reconnecting to ancestral knowledge and finding healing in relationship with nature.
This podcast so beautifully creates a space to celebrate and amplify Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ folks, and others who redefine outdoorsy, and we can’t wait to share that space with you. Guest speaker Laura Edmondson joins us in this live podcast interview.
